London considers copying Paris' Autolib electric car-sharing scheme

Since London has already copied Paris’ Velib public bicycle rental service, it seems fitting that England’s capital city is considering an electric vehicle-sharing scheme that mimics Paris’ recently launched Autolib. For full details on Autolib, click here.

London’s city officials will reportedly visit Paris to see how the French capital has managed to pull off an electric vehicle-sharing scheme. Murad Qureshi, chairman of the London Assembly Environment Committee, will travel in November to assess the overall success of the Autolib program.

Quereshi hopes that an electric-only rental club could help London achieve its zero-emissions vehicle targets. London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, has faced scrutiny from environmentalists for backtracking on his initial electric vehicle goals. Johnson scaled back his target to install 25,000 charging stations by 2015 to 7,500 by the end of 2013. That target was then slashed to only 1,300 by 2013. Johnson previously expressed his interest in an electric vehicle-for-hire scheme, but it’s unclear whether or not the mayor still supports such an ambitious program.
